  Materials

Coats & Clark Red Heart Super Sport yarn Art. E.271, one 3-oz. (279-yd).) skein white #O1. Knitting needles sizes 3 and 5 (3.25 and 3.75 mm) or size to obtain gauge. Satin ribbon 1/8" wide, 2/3 yard. Tapestry needle.


  Gauge

In St. st with larger needles, 6 sts - 1"; 8 rows = 1"

Make a gauge swatch as follows:

Using larger needle, CO 12 sts. Work in St st (k RS rows, p WS rows) for 8 rows or 1". Swatch should measure 2" wide. If it does not, p 1 row on RS of fabric to mark difference.

 

If swatch's too narrow, change to larger needles. 11 swatch is too wide, change to smaller needles. Work even for 1" to prove gauge.


  Knitted Cap

Brim:Using smaller needles, CO 57 sts.

Rows I and 3:K 1; * p 1, k 1; rep from * across.

Rows 2 and 4: P 1; * k l, p l; rep from * across.

Change to larger needles and K acrossncxt row, increasing 3 sts evenly spaced -- 60 sls. Purl one row.

Evelet Row (RS): K l; * k 2 tog, yo; rep from * across, endingwith k 1.

Beg with a purl row, work in St st until 2 3/4" from beg, decreasing 4 sts evenly spaced across last WS row -- 56 sts.

ShapeTop Row 1 (RS): * K 5, k " tog; rcp from * across-- 48 sls.

Row 2 and All WS Rows:Purl across.

Row 3:* K -), k 2 tog; rep from * across -- 40 sts.

Cont as csl, decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced every RS row until 8 sls rcm. Purl one row, then cut yarn, leaving a small tail.

 

Finishing:Weave yarn tail throughrcm sts and pull tightly to close top. Sew back scam. Weave ribbon through cyelct row, tying a bow in center front.
